Pasco man killed, passenger critically hurt in wrong-way crash

A Zephyrhills man was driving the wrong way when he fatally struck a tractor-trailer head-on in Okeechobee County early Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A passenger was critically injured in the crash, which occurred on State Road 60 and Peavine Trail — just east of Yeehaw Junction — around 3:45 a.m., troopers said.

According to troopers, 29-year-old Michael Van Pelt was driving a 2016 Dodge sedan westbound in the eastbound lanes of State Road 60 when he was struck by Anthony Alexander, 31, of Winter Haven.

Van Pelt died and Ronald Higgins, 43, of Dade City, was transported to Osceola Regional Hospital with critical injuries, troopers said.

Alexander suffered minor injuries, troopers said.

Investigators are performing toxicology tests to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, troopers said.
