If you want to believe in The X-Files in 2018, then I have good news. You should.
The 2016 six-episode revival was solid, but Season 11 really hits its stride, flexing the full range of X-Files muscles (horror, sci-fi, mystery, comedy, romance) and fully embracing its aging heroes and place in the age of fake news.
Wednesday's premiere shows the series mythology or mytharc both at its worst and best, doling out answers to long-held questions (about Mulder's parentage and the Smoking Man's motivations) while opening up a dozen more or providing alternative answers no one wants (the episode's end, ugh). The fast pace, supernatural elements and rapidly complicating web are dizzying, keeping you enthralled but also confused, just where creator Chris Carter wants you as he makes you doubt any and everything he's already made you believe. ...

Do you sense a disturbance in the Force?
That would probably be the landing of "Star Wars and the Power of Costume" at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, earlier this week. I got a preview of the blockbuster Smithsonian exhibit (docked in our corner of the galaxy through April 1), and I'm here to tell you the Force is strong with this one.
Jedi nerds will obviously love it. Fashionistas will love it. Pop culture and history geeks will love it. Younglings will love it....

A galaxy far, far away just got a lot closer.
More than 60 hand-crafted costumes from the Star Wars saga landed this week as part of the Smithsonian traveling exhibit "Star Wars and the Power of Costume," docked at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg through April 1.
Included are cultural icons such as Darth Vader's mask and Princess Leia's metal bikini as well as the stories behind them, exploring the creative process from George Lucas' vision to concept drawings to construction....
I've recently returned from a trip checking out some fall foliage in the Smoky Mountains. And I've got to say the adage about the grass being greener somewhere else probably refers to Florida in autumn. The only other colors one sees around here are the brown leaves of debris from Hurricane Irma.
I came home from the mountains with another sure sign fall is upon us, one of those colds/flus/unidentifiable congestion monsters that seems to endlessly go around....
I hope you know what you're doing, Star Wars.
After a long buildup, the title of the forthcoming Han Solo standalone movie was finally revealed today: Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Director Ron Howard announced the title in a Twitter video celebrating the end of filming.
CBS finally, finally, finally premiered its long-awaited new Star Trek series Discovery on Sunday night, albeit a bit delayed after 60 Minutes.
It also spent a whole lotta commercial time reminding you that the second episode is currently available on CBS All Access, the network's streaming service on which all future episodes will premiere in the United States (other countries get it on Netflix). The show also very blatantly ended on a tense moment in the hopes of sending fans online to resolve it....
Brad Paisley's show Saturday at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre is poised to be the first major concert in Tampa Bay since Irma passed through, canceling a host of shows....
The latest event falling victim to Hurricane Irma is a 2 Chainz concert that was set for Friday at Jannus Live.
In a tweet, Jannus said the cancellation was "due to the circumstances of Hurricane Irma."

Maybe you've been here your whole life and done absolutely everything — been to every beach, art museum and local music hangout. Kudos to you, superhuman.
But more likely, you're like me, and you've been in Tampa Bay for a handful of years without going to some of the "staples" that we always hear about. You know what I'm talking about. We all have those handful of places that we've never been, always on the edge of our minds. I read about some of them every week right here in Weekend....
A week after announcing original Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow had been fired, Disney announced today that J.J. Abrams is being brought in to write and direct the Star Wars installment.
Abrams co-wrote and directed Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which relaunched the series in 2015.
"With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement....
News broke this week that Disney is having a hard time casting the stars of its live action Aladdin. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio and director Guy Ritchie (yes, here is your reminder that the guy recently behind the disastrous King Arthur movie has been entrusted with a Disney classic) have been searching for "a male lead in his 20s who can act and sing ... of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent." Reportedly the obvious names of Brits Dev Patel and Riz Ahmed are among those considered for the role. But still, in months of casting call tests, no one has been chosen. I had a few suggestions from Bollywood....

If you've loved period dramas for any length of time, you've probably seen them all.
Not that there's a shortage of shows dramatizing any and everything from the 1600s to the '60s. But you have your stalwart producers in the U.K. and your faithful Masterpiece on PBS distributing those wares in the United States. You've seen your Poldarks and your Indian Summers and your Downtons. Maybe you've seen all 12 of my other period shows you should be watching, even the ones you have to get on DVD from a library near you....
As everyone knows, the best part of most if not all period dramas is the costumes — which is why we also call them costume dramas.
One of the this we love most about the re-creation of any number of bygone eras is the glamor they held, real or imagined.
But period dramas about fashion? Those reach a whole new height.
Here are seven period dramas that bring all the glamor....
CBS's repeatedly delayed new Star Trek series has another premiere date.
Star Trek: Discovery will premiere at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 24 (a Sunday) after an NFL game and 60 Minutes, the franchise announced today. The show was originally announced in late 2015 and set to premiere earlier this year. It was then pushed back several times — most recently it was rumored to premiere this summer — and original showrunner Bryan Fuller stepped back due to scheduling conflicts....
